Australia is known as a sporting nation. We are fortunate to boast champions across a range of different sporting disciplines including rugby, basketball, netball, hockey, cricket and more. Whether people choose to participate or spectate, sports plays a big part in the cultural lifestyle for Australians. According to Clearing House for Sport, there are over 70,000 sports clubs throughout Australia and contributes to over 95,000 jobs in the sector and 2.3 million volunteers. It fosters community through participation, health and well being among children and parents.

In order for Australians to excel in sports, every sports facility needs to provide athletes with a performance-enhancing environment. Facilities that rely on natural light are fortunate to be exposed to Australia’s premium sunshine all-year round. However, indoor and outdoor facilities that rely on artificial lighting (especially for those facilities which operate during twilight hours) need a lighting solution that will allow athletes to compete safely and with minimal distraction. Sports clubs are often under scrutiny for providing insufficient health and safety practices and a major cause of this stems from insufficient lighting. LED solutions can approximate daylight and provide athletes with favourable conditions to perform while contributing to spectators’ experience.

For example, LED Magazine reported in 2015 that one of Europe’s largest football clubs PSV Eindhoven upgraded to LED lighting to improve the illumination and visibility for players and spectators. Furthermore, the improved lighting has also supported high-definition compatibility for video recording and has reported a 30% decrease in light energy costs.

LEDified retrofitted the Jets gymnastics studio in Bendigo in Victoria now saves the centre over $5000 a year as well as fees on the ongoing maintenance cost. Prior to the retrofit, they relied on halogen lights, which didn’t spread the light evenly across the centre, and variances in the light would distract gymnasts during their training and performances. Since the upgrade, gymnasts have been able to improve their performance due to increased concentration and motive as a result of well-illuminated lighting. You can see the full case study here.

If you are a sports facilities manager, you should answer the following questions to see whether your facility requires any lighting upgrades.

  • If your indoor facilities are indoors, what kind of access is there to natural light?
  • Do you host events or games in the evening?
  • Does your arena have a high roof?
  • Are games easy to watch?
