Bulb Wattage x Hours Used Per Day / 1000 x Cost Per kWh = Cost

In our example:

50W halogen x 6 hours = 300/1000 = .3 x $.30 kWh = $.09 to run one halogen light for 6 hours per day.

10W LED x 6 hours = 60/1000 = .06 x $.30 kWh = $.018 to run one LED light for 6 hours per day.

If you multiply those numbers by 30 lights, you get $2.70 to run 30 halogens lights per day and $.54 to run 30 LEDs. Extrapolated out over 365 days the costs are: $985.50 to use 30 halogen lights for 6 hours per day every day and $197 to use 30 LEDs for the same amount of time. The difference between $985.50 and $197 is $788.50. That is the amount a property owner can expect to save in electricity costs every year if they swapped out 30 halogen lights for 30 LEDs and ran them for 6 hours each day!

With nearly $800 in savings annually, a property owner can save $1577 in two years, recouping their initial $1500 investment within the first two years of using LEDs. Compare this to a bank interest rate, which averages a 2.5% return annually, or $37.50 annually, and you would not see that $1500 recouped for 40 years.
